*Yes, we do have brown-ish tap water in Greenville.

Why else would we always drink iced tea or after five o'clock take a splash of bourbon with our water?

As good hosts we try to prepare guests for our water but sometimes we forget. We’ll hear the toilet flush three times or a poor wayfarer scream when the bath tub fills.

It’s been this way for generations, here and all over the Delta. And no, it’s not because we drink nasty river water.

Our wonderful soft water is drawn from a deep aquifer below an ancient cypress bog, we’re told. Surface water filtering through this cypress layer is not only purified, it picks up healthy minerals and tannins that stain the water a very pale, transparent "brown."

People near and far ask us why Greenville has had more native writers per capita than any other American town.

We believe our lovely waterborne tannins, not unlike those in fine wines, tend to make us Deltans (and Greenvillians in particular) rather interesting, extremely creative, and inclined to pursue literary enterprise and entertainments.

Then again, it could be as Mr. Foote said, "there’s nothing else to do down here, so you write."

And read.

And drink the brown water.
